Gennai is an AI invoice scanner built by NUVIO LAB and co-founders Laura Abosaid and Nikita Degtyarev, a newer entrant focused on pulling PDF invoices out of Gmail, Outlook, and IMAP inboxes, with Google Drive sync and a native Holded integration for the Spanish market. It is also less than half the price of Receiptor AI at the entry tier, and Gennai's own comparison page leads with exactly that: $12 per month versus $29.
That number is real, and this article does not argue with it. The Receiptor AI vs Gennai question is really a different one: what does each tool actually complete for the money, and what does the remaining manual work cost you? Here's how Receiptor AI, the AI-native bookkeeping automation agent, compares on capture scope, verification, and total workflow cost:

What Gennai does well
Gennai's price structure is genuinely friendly to very small operations. A permanent free plan with 10 invoices a month means you can test it with real data indefinitely, and $5 credit packs that never expire are a fair way to handle overflow months. If your volume is tiny, this is a real advantage, and we say so plainly below.
The capture basics are covered. Automatic scanning of Gmail, Outlook, and IMAP inboxes, retroactive scanning of historical email over a date range you choose, WhatsApp and Telegram forwarding, and photo capture. For a tool at this price, that channel list is strong.
Practical touches show accounting DNA. Custom AI rules ("always tag Amazon invoices as office supplies"), an external accountant access role so your bookkeeper gets their own login, and Google Drive folders organized by year and month. Co-founder Laura Abosaid comes from finance and accounting, and it shows in these details.
The Receiptor difference: completing the workflow, not just the scan
The gap between the two tools is not any single feature. It is where the work stops and you take over.
Capture scope decides what you never have to touch. Gennai describes its email scanning as finding emails with PDF invoice attachments. But a large share of real-world receipts, from rideshares, SaaS subscriptions, and marketplaces, arrive as the email itself, with no attachment at all. Receiptor AI reads PDF attachments, image attachments, and the email body, so body-only receipts are captured instead of becoming your job (our email receipt extraction guide covers how this works in depth). It monitors every connected inbox continuously (unlimited inboxes on every plan) and scans retroactively across years of history, so the backlog and the future are both covered.
Receiptor checks applicable line-item calculations, subtotals, tax, discounts, and totals. Validation problems can trigger AI review against the source and another check. Unresolved discrepancies remain flagged for review. Duplicate versions and related invoice/payment documents remain distinct evidence in the transaction workflow.
Receiptor can use correction history and workspace context to inform recurring processing. Review learned behavior and exceptions as your documents change. Receiptor checks applicable line-item calculations, subtotals, tax, discounts, and totals. Validation problems can trigger AI review against the source and another check. Unresolved discrepancies remain flagged for review.
Illustrative review example: check a supplier invoice’s extracted amount, billed legal entity, category, and relationship to any payment receipt; then inspect the supported record matched or created in the accounting system.
Receiptor supports Bills, Spend Money transactions, and Bill payments in Xero, and Bills, Expenses, and Bill payments in QuickBooks. The workflow checks supported existing records and attaches originals to matched or newly created records. Legal entity assignment helps identify the billed company, and each entity can use its corresponding accounting connection. Duplicate copies and related invoice/payment documents are handled as different evidence for the transaction. Inspect the destination result and resolve ambiguous cases before expanding automation.
Pricing breakdown
Gennai (based on publicly available information from gennai.io as of July 2026):
- Free: $0/month. 10 invoices, 2 email accounts. Permanent.
- Starter: $12/month ($9/mo billed yearly). 75 invoices, 5 email accounts, automatic email scanning, AI rules, duplicate detection.
- Growth: $29/month ($24/mo yearly). 250 invoices, 15 email accounts, scheduled export.
- Business: $79/month ($66/mo yearly). 750 invoices, 50 email accounts, personalized onboarding.
- Overflow: credit packs from $5 for 20 credits, non-expiring.
Receiptor AI:
- Starter: $29/month. 1 workspace, 500 emails/messages analyzed, 50 documents extracted, 50 agent uses, 1 connected accounting org. Unlimited email accounts and unlimited mobile scanners, on this and every plan. Overages are metered ($0.04 per extra document) rather than requiring an upgrade.
- Growth: $79/month. Unlimited workspaces, 2,500 analyzed, 250 documents, storage export (Google Drive, Dropbox), custom automations, business entity matching, and API access for connecting AI assistants and other tools.
- Scale: $199/month. 10,000 analyzed, 1,000 documents, 5 accounting orgs.
- Yearly billing gives 2 months free. Retroactive extraction is quoted separately based on email volume, and the first workspace on any plan includes one free retroactive extraction covering the last month.
One correction for the record: Gennai's comparison page lists Receiptor AI's Starter plan as including 1 email account. Every Receiptor AI plan includes unlimited email accounts and mobile scanners; the plans meter documents, not inboxes.

What the $17 gap actually buys: a worked example
Here is the math, with every assumption visible so you can rerun it with your own numbers.
Illustrative cost scenario, not a measured product benchmark: assume 15 documents require three minutes of additional handling and another 20 require 1.5 minutes of review. Those assumptions total 75 minutes. Replace both assumptions with observations from your own trial; they do not establish how much work either product actually requires.
Value your time at a deliberately modest $25 an hour and the manual remainder costs about $31 a month. $12 + $31 ≈ $43 effective, versus $29 where those steps are automated and verified. The cheaper subscription is not the cheaper workflow once your volume and channel mix are real.
And the honest flip side: if you receive 10 or so invoices a month, nearly all as PDF attachments, that manual remainder rounds to zero and Gennai's free or Starter plan is the rational choice. The math only tips as volume and messiness grow.
Which should you choose?
Choose Gennai if:
- Your volume is low (roughly 10 to 75 invoices a month) and they mostly arrive as PDF attachments
- You want a permanent free plan to test with real data before paying anything
- You use Holded as your accounting software (Gennai is the option with a native connection)
- You prefer Google Drive or OneDrive folders and a Google Sheets feed as your system of record
Choose Receiptor AI if:
- Your receipts arrive every way real receipts arrive: email bodies, attachments, WhatsApp photos, and years of backlog
- You want validation and exception review alongside supported accounting automations.
- You want an agent that explains every decision and learns your corrections
- Your time is worth more than the $17/month difference, which the worked example above helps you check
Switching from Gennai takes one sitting: connect your inbox (any provider), run a retroactive scan to rebuild your document history from the original emails, and connect Xero or QuickBooks so your chart of accounts imports automatically. Gennai's own migration guide recommends running two tools in parallel for a billing cycle to compare extraction accuracy. We think that is good advice in both directions.
