Receiptor AI now works inside WhatsApp, iMessage, SMS, and MMS, so you can scan receipts, ask for spending reports, fix accounting exports, and set up automations by sending a message. This is a recap of our webinar demo showing how your bookkeeper now lives in your chat app, no app to install and no laptop required.
What Receiptor AI does
Receiptor AI connects to sources such as WhatsApp, iMessage, SMS, and MMS. It gathers every receipt and invoice in those sources and categorizes them into accounting software such as Xero and QuickBooks. We recently released the iMessage, SMS, and MMS integration so a broader set of devices can use Receiptor AI. In this demo we focus on the WhatsApp integration: scanning receipts, asking questions, and setting up automations directly in chat.
Why we built it for WhatsApp
Everyone has a relationship with an accountant, and accountants periodically ask for context on our receipts and invoices, especially as a deadline approaches. But nobody knows those documents better than we do. Since Receiptor AI extracts and categorizes the documents, when its confidence in a category is low it reaches out to us directly and asks for context, then categorizes better in the future.
The premise of Receiptor AI for WhatsApp is to perform bookkeeping tasks on the go, without a computer. For professionals who are often out of the office making purchases, it is a convenient way to scan receipts and store them in Receiptor AI on the go. Other companies do this through apps, but what makes Receiptor AI different is the AI agent linked to it.
Capturing a receipt live and exporting
From the Receiptor AI dashboard you activate the WhatsApp functionality, and if no message arrives you can scan a QR code to start the chat. To capture an expense, drop a document into the chat. You can drop an image, take a picture, or forward a PDF with no context at all. If you want to add context, type it and the AI categorizes the document right away.
In the demo, a Bank of America receipt is added as an initial deposit for a company bank card. Receiptor AI saves that context, uses it for this receipt, and reuses it for similar transactions in the future. You can capture by scanning, forwarding from other chats, or dropping in PDFs. Most other apps only scan and do not handle PDFs.
How do I ask about my spending in WhatsApp?
You ask questions in plain language: how much did I spend last month, what was the top merchant last year, or how much did we spend in Q1. Receiptor AI runs the query in the background and replies with the answer. It can also flag issues, such as currencies it could not convert, so you can fix them from the same chat. Anything you can do in the web dashboard you can also do through WhatsApp.
Can I manage Xero exports from my phone?
Yes. You can check the status of your accounting exports by asking a question such as do we have any pending exports to Xero. Receiptor AI replies with the count and flags any item that needs attention, for example a document already found in Xero. You can then perform the same actions you would in the web dashboard. In the demo, a document is renamed directly from chat and the Xero export is retried. With a few messages back and forth you can retrieve a document, rename it, and re-sync.
Automating reports from chat
You can ask what automations are set up, and Receiptor AI lists the existing ones, such as Xero and QuickBooks. You can create new automations by describing them, for example every Monday at 9 AM Pacific Time, send a CSV report with last week's paid documents. Receiptor AI creates an export approval with the schedule and payment status applied, ready for you to approve. The same approach works for one-time exports, such as gathering all documents from a week of travel to build an expense report.
Why WhatsApp
Most solutions on the market stop at scanning receipts on the go. Large markets such as Saudi Arabia, North Africa, and Southeast Asia rely heavily on WhatsApp messaging. Being able to use WhatsApp without installing an app, and forwarding documents from other chats, is convenient. Asking questions and performing actions over WhatsApp extends what would otherwise be a simple scanning app.
Recap: your bookkeeper in your chat app
Your bookkeeper now lives in your chat app, through WhatsApp or iMessage. You can capture anything without typing, or add a short note for context without a back and forth. You can answer on the spot, and it works conversationally rather than as just a tool.
With the Ask Context feature, each phone number on the platform can be used to request context for documents where Receiptor AI had low confidence. Receiptor AI uses memories to categorize expenses automatically, and when confidence is too low it asks you and remembers your answer for next time. The result is a bookkeeper that works in the background, keeps your books up to date and tax ready, and asks for help only when it needs context.
