If you run your practice on Sage and you're looking at AutoEntry alternatives, the three worth comparing are Hubdoc, Dext, and Receiptor AI. All four read a receipt or invoice well; what separates them is how documents reach the tool and how much of the coding, deduplication, entity-matching, and document-linking work still lands on you afterward.
The rest of this article goes through each one in detail, including AutoEntry's own strengths, so you can see which fits both how your clients send documents and how much manual cleanup you're willing to keep doing.

AutoEntry: what it does well and where it stops
AutoEntry, owned by Sage, is built for practices already using Sage who need a capture layer on top. It reads receipts, invoices, supplier statements, and bank statements, learns how you code each document over time (account, nominal, tax code), and syncs into Sage, Xero, or QuickBooks. It also matches captured invoices against open purchase orders, which is a genuinely useful feature for practices doing purchase-order-heavy client work.
AutoEntry takes documents in three ways: its mobile app, email forwarding, and upload. That covers most practices. The limit shows up with clients who won't open an app or remember a forwarding address, like a contractor photographing a fuel receipt on site, and with receipts that sit in a client's inbox until someone remembers to forward them.
After capture, AutoEntry extracts and pre-fills each document "for approval," in Sage's own words, and learns your coding supplier by supplier. Ambiguous documents and exceptions are reviewed by someone at the practice, which is where most of the remaining manual time goes.
AutoEntry pricing
AutoEntry runs on a credit system rather than flat tiers, and every plan includes the same feature set: only the credit allowance changes. Prices below are in USD; AutoEntry also bills in GBP, EUR, CAD, AUD and other currencies.
Plan | Monthly credits | Price |
|---|---|---|
Bronze | 50 | $13/mo |
Silver | 100 | $24/mo |
Gold | 200 | $46/mo |
Platinum | 500 | $103/mo |
Diamond | 1,500 | $298/mo |
Sapphire | 2,500 | $469/mo |
Credits are consumed per document type: a standard invoice or receipt costs 1 credit, an invoice with line items or a supplier statement costs 2 credits, and each page of a bank or card statement costs 3 credits. Unused credits roll over for 90 days, and all plans include unlimited users and unlimited clients for accountants.
Hubdoc (Xero Smart Document Capture)
Hubdoc, labelled Smart Document Capture in some Xero regions, is included free with Xero. It covers mobile, email and upload capture, plus automatic fetching of bills and statements from connected suppliers and utilities. Standalone pricing for non-Xero users runs around $12/month.
For a Sage-based practice, Hubdoc matters if you also serve Xero clients: it's a reasonable free option for them. It supports manually entered lines and reusing previous items, but not automatic line-item extraction the way AutoEntry and Dext do, and its supplier rules are set up client by client.
Dext: the most complete practice toolkit
Dext (formerly Receipt Bank) is the most feature-complete of the three legacy tools for practices managing many clients. Its Practice plans add bank feeds, employee expense management, mileage tracking, VAT management, supplier reconciliation, and over 36 integrations. Documents come in through the Dext mobile app, email, web upload and, since September 2025, WhatsApp.
Pricing is structured for practices rather than individual businesses:
Plan | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Business | $25.21/mo | 250 documents, 5 users, adjustable via sliders |
Practice Essentials | $17.70/client/mo | 10-client minimum, annual commitment billed monthly |
Practice Advanced | $19.20/client/mo | Adds workflows, client health scores, deadline tracking |
Practice plans come with an annual commitment (billed monthly) and no mid-term downgrades, so budget for the full year, not just the monthly rate. Receiptor AI plans can be billed monthly, quarterly or yearly, and every plan includes unlimited email inboxes and mobile scanners.
Receiptor AI: an AI agent for the whole document workflow
Receiptor AI is built as an AI agent: it collects documents wherever clients send them, understands each one in context, and manages them the way someone at your practice would. On capture, that means:
- Email inbox monitoring across any provider, live or retroactive, so nothing needs a forwarding rule.
- WhatsApp and iMessage capture through a dedicated number, so a client can text a photo of a receipt the same way they'd text anyone else. No app to open, no login to remember.
- Quick Upload for anyone who does prefer drag-and-drop.
Once a document is in, Receiptor AI extracts the data, matches it to the right business entity, and syncs directly to Xero or QuickBooks with automatic categorization against your chart of accounts. When something's ambiguous, the AI asks a clarifying question instead of guessing, across every one of those channels.
Capture and extraction are only half of it. Automations let you build rules, trigger, condition, action, from a plain-English description, and Memories watches how you actually categorize, label, and manage documents and proposes new rules from the patterns it sees, so the system adapts to your workflow instead of the other way around. It also handles the cleanup work: duplicate documents are flagged instead of posted twice, each document is matched to the right business entity when a workspace manages more than one, and related documents, a credit note against the invoice it adjusts, for example, get linked together instead of sitting as separate records.
For Sage-based practices, Receiptor AI connects through Sage Accounting's AI Capture feature, which gives each account its own forwarding email address: an automation forwards every captured document there, so the practice keeps its existing Sage workflow.
Receiptor AI's plans start at $29/month (Starter: 50 documents, 500 entities analyzed) and scale to $79/month (Growth: 250 documents, unlimited client workspaces, storage export, custom automations, business-entity matching, API and MCP access) and $199/month (Scale: 1,000 documents). Every plan, including Starter, includes unlimited email accounts and unlimited mobile scanners, with no per-client pricing.
Which one fits your practice
- Your clients already forward documents by email reliably: AutoEntry's tight Sage integration and purchase-order matching are hard to beat. There's little reason to switch.
- You serve a mix of Xero and Sage clients: Hubdoc is free for the Xero side; your Sage clients still need a separate capture layer.
- You manage many clients and want deep practice-level tooling: Dext's Practice tiers offer the most built-out feature set of the three, if you can commit to the annual contract.
- You want documents collected straight from client inboxes and phones, with the coding, duplicate checks and entity matching handled by an AI agent: Receiptor AI, syncing directly to Xero and QuickBooks and to Sage through its AI Capture email.
